As a leader in healthcare, AtlantiCare, a member of Geisinger Health System, has made a commitment to eliminating the sale and serving of bottled/prepackaged and fountain-prepared sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) from all of its locations as of Thursday, September 7, 2017.

“As a result of the documented health consequences of added sugar, we are taking what we believe is a sip in the right direction toward enhancing the health and well-being of our patients, visitors, staff and providers,” said Audrey Heist, director, Health Engagement, AtlantiCare.

“Consumption of added sugar, found in sugar-sweetened beverages, is linked to weight gain and a greater risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and tooth decay,” Heist explained. “It is our responsibility as a healthcare system to promote healthy behaviors and to make healthy choices easier.”

Providers and staff are welcome to bring whatever beverage choice they prefer to their AtlantiCare workplace. Patients and visitors can also bring their own beverages to AtlantiCare sites. “We recognize that some patients might require or request different beverage options based on specific needs or a diagnosis from a physician or dietitian,” said Heist. Regular and diet ginger ale will be available in the floor pantries. Diet soda will still be available in the cafeterias and vending machines.

Eliminating sugar-sweetened beverages aligns with the healthy initiatives AtlantiCare has already implemented as part of its vision of building healthy communities. Staff, patients, and visitors can find nutrition labeling/calorie counts in the hospital campuses’ cafeterias. The cafeterias also display monthly superfoods tables to promote healthy eating. Healthy food options are available at the hospital cafeterias and cafes and at the AtlantiCare LifeCenter Café in Egg Harbor Township. The soon-to-open café in the AtlantiCare Health Park, Manahawkin will also offer healthy choices.
