American Cancer Society recognizes
AtlantiCare and its Starfish Team
Team looks forward to warmer training weather

The American Cancer Society Northeast Region recently recognized the AtlantiCare Starfish Team riders and the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute, a Fox Chase Cancer Center partner, for their support of the society’s annual Bridge to the Beach Bike-a-Thon.

The team has raised $73,032 over the last ten years as participants rode from Philadelphia and/or other cities along the route to Atlantic City.

Harry Chaikin, M.D., AtlantiCare Physician Group Primary Care, Brigantine, and an avid bicyclist personally, formed the team in 2008 and continues to serve as its captain. “AtlantiCare has supported us since the first year we entered as a team,” said Chaikin. “In addition to supporting us financially, AtlantiCare has provided transportation and other support to the team.” Chaikin said the team comprises AtlantiCare staff and providers, as well as community members. It had 30 riders the first year and 108 in 2017.

Chaikin recognized individual member riders for their participation and fundraising efforts. He especially thanked Susan Booksha, MSN, RN, CHPN, Professional Practice and Development specialist, AtlantiCare Nursing, and Anita Garner, MSN, RN, FNP-C, AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Mainland Campus Progressive Care Unit. The two have served as his co-captains over the last four years. “They actively recruit new and experienced riders, manage details and logistics, and foster a spirit of camaraderie, making the ride fun,” he said.

Chaikin has already registered the team for the June 10, 2018 event. “We’ll offer riders the opportunity to train together at least weekly once the weather warms up in the spring,” said Chaikin.

“Because of AtlantiCare’s generosity and passion, the American Cancer Society is able to be there for so many touched by cancer—not only in our community, but communities everywhere,” said Taryn Jones, American Cancer Society Health Systems manager. “The funds raised at Bike-a-Thon continue to fund innovative cancer research, and provide around-the-clock access to free information and support.”
