AtlantiCare encouraging all ages to go "green" during National Nutrition Month

Details: AtlantiCare is encouraging people of all ages to go green during National Nutrition Month by drinking smoothies made from fruit and/or vegetables. Its Growing Green and Healthy Schools, Healthy Children programs are holding events and demonstrations, including, but not limited to, Green Smoothie demonstrations for the community and AtlantiCare staff; Green Mustache contests; Chefs in the Classroom presentations; and social media invitations to share selfies of green mustaches and healthy smoothie recipes.

Throughout March, AtlantiCare's Well4Life website is featuring healthy smoothie recipe video demonstrations. The week of March 16, AtlantiCare's Food and Nutrition Services Team will demonstrate healthy cooking techniques in the cafeterias of AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Mainland and Atlantic City campuses.

AtlantiCare has also visited five schools in the early part of March for National Nutrition Month events.

About AtlantiCare's Healthy Schools, Healthy Children Green Smoothies/Green Mustache contest
AtlantiCare is promoting good nutrition and encouraging students to eat more fruits and vegetables with its Green Mustache contest. In 2014, seventeen area schools taste-tested green smoothies – smoothies created with fresh or frozen healthy produce. AtlantiCare Healthy School, Healthy Children staff will assist with green smoothie demonstrations as requested.

Schools that submit four photos of students and staff wearing green "mustaches" are entered into a random drawing for a gift card.

About Chefs in the Classroom
Local chefs, in partnership with AtlantiCare, visit AtlantiCare Healthy Schools, Healthy Children participating schools to offer a healthy cooking demonstration. HSHC provides a $150 stipend for schools to secure a chef and procure materials, or organizes the event. Chefs work with students to encourage healthy eating habits, and demonstrate healthy recipes that students can make at home.

AtlantiCare's Healthy Schools, Healthy Children program partners with schools in Atlantic, Cape May and southern Ocean County, to assist with the implementation of fitness and nutrition policies and make health and wellness resources available to schools, students and families.

About AtlantiCare's Growing Green Initiative
Growing Green AtlantiCare addresses root causes of chronic disease by increasing consumption of healthy foods through the creation of access points for fresh, local produce. The AtlantiCare Foundation provides funds through its Growing Green grant program to create and sustain community and school gardens. These gardens improve the nutrition practices of youth and adults through the growth of healthy, sustainable foods complemented by wellness and nutrition programming. In addition, the gardens beautify open spaces and promote collaboration and empowerment among residents and community groups.
To date, AtlantiCare's Growing Green initiative has funded the construction of 36 school gardens and 15 community gardens in southeastern New Jersey.
