Who is at Risk for Stroke?

Every 45 seconds, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke, the leading cause of disability in adults – especially older adults.

Always dial 9-1-1 for Stroke Symptoms

You’re at risk if you have a family or personal history of stroke or if you:

  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have high cholesterol
  • Are a smoker (cigarettes, cigars, pipes)
  • Have diabetes
  • Suffer from any kind of cardiovascular disease
  • Eat a high calorie, high fat diet
  • Are overweight or obese
  • Live an inactive lifestyle
  • Are addicted to drugs or alcohol

The American Stroke Association offers these helpful tips on reducing your risk of having a stroke:

  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Exercise every day
  • Know your blood pressure
  • Stop smoking
