Scott E. Monk Scholarship Fund

Happy healthcare professional

Application Information:

Dr. Scott E. Monk was a brilliant Trauma and Critical Care Surgeon who began his career at Cooper Hospital and became the Medical Director at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. His great passion besides family, friends, and exceptional patient care, was education.

With this in mind, several years ago, the Monk Family created the Scott E. Monk, DO Scholarship Fund to help offset the skyrocketing costs of a medical education. Since 2009, more than $150,000 has been awarded to many outstanding recipients who, with our assistance, were able to complete their medical education more quickly and graduate with less debt.

Four awards of $5,000 each will be issued to eligible individuals who are currently pursuing a medical or nursing degree.

Application Criteria:

  1. Applicants are limited to AtlantiCare employees and their dependents who are currently pursuing a career in the medical or nursing field.  Applicants must be enrolled in a qualifying 2 or 4-year degree program or who have completed the prerequisites at an accredited college or university and are in good academic standing.
  2. Scholarship recipients must attend an accredited college or university with tuition requirements in the academic year following their selection.
  3. Include a short essay (approx. 250 words) describing why you should be selected for this scholarship based on the following criteria:
    1. How your work impacts the medical community;
    2. How you have gone above and beyond for a patient and their family;
    3. Why you are in need of scholarship support to pursue your academic interests
  4. Any documents that attest to community service or volunteer work in which the applicant has been involved should be submitted (this includes any awards, certificates, or commendations that may have been received in reference to volunteer work).
  5. Provide a copy of transcripts, including class rank
  6. Submit two letters of recommendation from non-family members.
    1. It is desired that these letters address the applicant’s qualities such as motivation, leadership and commitment.
    2. Letters should be submitted with the completed scholarship application form.

All complete applications must be postmarked by April 5, 2024. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
