Dr. Matthew McGuigan experienced the “wow” factor of optometry at a young age. “My eye doctor put the machine in front of my eyes, and suddenly I could see clearly,” he says. Now he’s on the other side and takes great pride in seeing that reaction. “It’s so much fun, especially with the kids. Their eyes light up when they read the bottom line of the chart, often saying they didn’t even know there were letters down there,” he says.
\nDr. McGuigan graduated summa cum laude from LaSalle University, Philadelphia. He was number one in his class at Salus University, Elkins Park, Pa., where he earned his Doctor of Optometry degree. Over the last decade, he has been gaining experience in a variety of settings in Delaware County, Pa. He is building a brand-new service for AtlantiCare, opening its first optometry office in Mays Landing. Dr. McGuigan performs routine eye exams for eyeglasses and contact lenses. “Contact lenses can really be life changing. They make it so much easier to enjoy the beach, outdoors and sports,” he says.
\nHe also manages diseases like glaucoma, dry eyes, macular degeneration and cataracts – and monitors diabetes, which can cause vision loss. “We also see a fair amount of eye emergencies, like scratched corneas, retinal problems and pinkeye,” he says. He says the optometrist is a first line of defense against disease. “They say the eye is the window to the soul, but it’s really a window to the whole body. I can pick up problems in other areas, like high blood pressure and diabetes. I’m like the point guard,  passing the ball to the right specialist when the patient needs additional attention,” he says.
