About Me
Dr. Sivashankar Sivaraman is enthusiastic about pulmonary medicine. “I really love being a pulmonologist. It can be very complex,” he explains. “Most of our patients present with shortness of breath. We work very hard to get to the bottom of their issues – since not only lung problems can cause symptoms, but other organs like the kidneys, heart and liver can be involved. You have to be on your toes to figure out the underlying issues,” he says.
\nDr. Sivaraman is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and critical care medicine. He serves as director of the Respiratory Department at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. He helps people with a variety of respiratory conditions, like COPD, asthma, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension and lung cancer. He also plays a key role getting critical patients past crisis in the intensive care unit. He always had an interest in the science and his family encouraged him to parlay those skills into a career. Suffering the loss of his grandfather at a young age motivated him all the more to achieve his dream. He wants to prevent such tragedies for other families.
\nDr. Sivaraman graduated from Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, India. He served his internal medicine residency at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. He completed a pulmonary medicine fellowship at Bridgeport Hospital – Yale University, Connecticut, and a critical care fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, New York. He speaks English, Hindi, Urdu and Tamil fluently. He is also passionate about teaching. “We see our residents grow and advance, as we help them develop their clinical skills and bedside manner,” he says. “It’s up to us to empower them to become the best physicians they can be. When they become attending physicians, do fellowships and hit new heights, it makes me very happy.” In 2018 and 2021 he was named AtlantiCare’s Teacher of the Year.
