About Me

Dr. Barrett Woods learned about the healing power of surgery at a young age. His mother was in pain from a back injury with surgery, her suffering was relieved and she returned to an active life.

“I get to see that kind of dramatic improvement in my patients, every week. When we first meet, they often have a lot of fear and apprehension. Then, after the operation, they can’t believe how well they’re doing,” he says. Dr. Woods is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He treats a wide range of problems including stenosis, pinched nerves, herniations, scoliosis and trauma. A native of Pittsburgh, he is a biology graduate of Clemson University. He returned to his hometown to earn his M.D. at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency. At Pitt, he went on to serve a general surgery internship and an orthopaedic research fellowship. He completed a spine surgery fellowship

at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, where he remains affiliated. In that capacity, he serves as an assistant professor of spine surgery at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, conducting research and mentoring young physicians.

He has shared his research findings through many publications, book chapters and presentations. He is an active member in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society, the Cervical Spine Research Society and the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery, among others “I like talking and listening to people. Surgery is just one option, but we must also understand their social situation and all the stressors that could affect their health. I get to know them, make them laugh and smile and help them with real problems,” he says.

He lives in Galloway with his wife and three boys. In addition to the time he volunteers for research, he and his family are active in their church.
