In his first year of medical school, Brian Steixner, MD, received a bit of advice that has guided his entire approach to medicine. “You should take care of everyone as if they were your mom,” he remembers being told. “That’s always stuck with me and informs how I interact with my patients. I offer the guidance I would want if I were making that
\ndecision for my family.”
\nAlways interested in science and guided by a deep desire to help others, Steixner earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, and completed residencies in general surgery and urology at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. Steixner is certified by the American Board of Urology.
\nAt AtlantiCare Physician Group Urology, Steixner treats urologic conditions routine and complex. Whether patients are struggling with kidney stones or a new cancer diagnosis, Steixner’s approach is to collaborate with each patient to create a personalized care plan. “People who are informed and understand their condition as well as the options
\nin front of them, and have the support of family and friends, I think they do better,” he says. “If they feel supported and informed they make a better decision and have a better outcome.”
\nTo achieve this, Steixner believes in working together to understand not only what is causing patients pain and discomfort but also what their goal is. Often, that involves education and treatment designed to help patients take control of their health. “There are options available,” he says. “And they can improve a patient’s quality of life as
\nthey move into their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond.”
\nAn avid skier and marathon runner, Steixner’s hobbies include cooking, music and Philadelphia sports. He enjoys coastal New Jersey living with his wife and two children and values being part of his community.
