About Me
As a rheumatologist, Dr. Iqra Aftab treats autoimmune and inflammatory disorders, including lupus and various
\nforms of arthritis. She puts the most emphasis on healing. “I want patients to know I am on their side, especially
\nwhen they are confused or frightened about their disease. My goal is to provide a space for healing, even if I cannot
\noffer a cure,” she says.
\nDr. Aftab earned her medical degree at St. George’s University School of Medicine, Grenada. She’s board-certified
\nin rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She completed a rheumatology fellowship at SUNY
\nDownstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York. She is also board-certified in internal medicine. Her internal
\nmedicine residency and internship were at Maimonides Medical Center, also in Brooklyn.
\nShe graduated from University of Toronto, Canada, as a double major, in biology for health sciences and French. She also holds a diploma of higher sciences from Northumbria University, Newcastle, England. She speaks Hindi, Urdu and French. Dr. Aftab has authored or co-authored many papers, presentations and a medical textbook chapter.
\nThe best part of her job is getting to know her patients, long term. “My patients invite me into their lives. I hear their
\nhopes, joys and sorrows. It is a privilege to be a part of their stories,” she says.
\nShe has remained an active volunteer – in soup kitchens, orphanages and as a student leader, tutor, peer coach and
\nresearch assistant. She also has represented the medical community to members of Congress.
