About Me
At the age of 10, Dr. Maharaul was inspired to change the world for the better. “Back home in India, I was very close to my grandmother,” Dr. Maharaul recalls. “She fell ill and her doctors just didn’t communicate very well to the family. We felt isolated and helpless. That started a little fire. I thought I should become a doctor and work to be a good one,” she says.
She made good on her promise. Dr. Maharaul is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She received her medical degree at GMERS Medical College and Hospital, Gotri, India. She did her internal medicine residency at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, N.J.
She also completed a fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia. She is actively preparing for board certification in endocrinology. She speaks English, Hindi and Gujarati.
She manages problems including diabetes and disorders of the thyroid, pituitary and adrenal glands. “Endocrinology demands extensive knowledge of physiology, since it affects every system of the body. The endocrine system is like a pathway that makes all the connections. It really excites me,” she says.
Her approach is treating the patient as a whole. “Canadian medical pioneer William Osler wrote, ‘the good physician treats the disease, the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.’ I first heard those words in medical school. They helped me understand that the best doctors combine clinical skills with empathy,” she says.
She says her colleagues at AtlantiCare are very supportive and welcoming. “When I have a question, a coworker will help me find the answer. Like me, they enjoy exploring and discussing interesting cases. They smile a lot, they’re genuinely nice people,” she says.
