Briana Cole, MSN, CNM, wanted to be a midwife before she even knew what that meant. “I always had this passion for pregnancy, labor and birth,” Cole remembers. “I knew I wanted to catch babies, but I also knew medical school wasn’t for me. I wanted to support my patients before, during, and after labor and birth. “I wanted to be with them.”
She first learned about midwifery when given the opportunity to shadow her OB/GYN as a high school junior. That’s who listened to Cole’s interest and suggested the career path that has led her to AtlantiCare Physician Group, OB/GYN as a certified nurse midwife.
Cole earned her bachelor of science in nursing from Widener University and a master of science in nursing – nurse midwifery from the University of Pennsylvania. She spent a semester in Auckland, New Zealand, and her exposure to the culture’s emphasis on postpartum care has impacted her approach.
“Labor and birth is a very intimate experience. You form a bond very quickly because your patients are so vulnerable,” Cole says. “To be with them not only in that experience but also during pregnancy and post-delivery is a gift. I enjoy being part of the whole spectrum of care.”
Cole completed her clinical rotation at AtlantiCare in 2019. As a person of color, she also appreciates the diversity of the AtlantiCare team and the greater community it serves. She believes it is valuable in creating a nurturing environment. “My passion and my desire is to be supportive of my patients,” she says. “My ultimate goal is a happy baby and a happy mom. I’m going to do everything I can to get them there.”
