Danielle Barrios has been a pediatric physician assistant with AtlantiCare since 2018, providing well checkups, preventive care, treating illness and addressing behavioral issues. Her practice treats many newborns and Danielle became aware of the struggles many new moms have with breastfeeding. To help them get over this hurdle, she trained as a breastfeeding specialist, certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.
\nShe is also board-certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She earned her master’s from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Piscataway, and her bachelor’s from Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions, Philadelphia. Danielle volunteers for the Female Forward Alliance, a local group supporting mothers and children. “Pediatrics was my last rotation in PA school, and I just fell in love with working with kids. Then, I became a mom, and I developed an even greater love for treating children and their families,” she says.
\nShe also struggled with breastfeeding her first child, so she really connects with her new moms. “Breastfeeding is not nearly as easy as people make it out to be – there’s a learning curve. Understanding the physiology and learning the skills makes the difference between success and frustration. Education empowers mothers to feed their babies the way they want to. I also examine both mother and baby to ensure there are no physical problems getting in the way,” she explains.
\nShe says all her AtlantiCare colleagues share a common goal – taking the best care of each patient and helping them separate fact from fiction. “Parents often just need reassurance, so we do our best to give them accurate information. We spend a lot of time debunking what they have seen on social media.”
