About Me
Dr. Danielle Y. Ponzio is a life-long athlete and remains active in sports and outdoor recreation. She knows first-hand how important joint health is to enjoying the activities we love. “I enjoy cycling, running, skiing and yoga. I am committed to getting my patients back to active lifestyles,” she says. Dr. Ponzio is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, with specialized training in hip and knee joint replacement and complex revision joint replacement.
Dr. Ponzio provides both surgical and non-surgical care for conditions affecting the hip or knee, including degenerative, inflammatory and post-traumatic arthritis, avascular necrosis, hip dysplasia, infection and fractures. She also cares for patients having difficulty after prior hip or knee replacement. Born and raised in New Jersey, she holds a bachelor’s in molecular biology from Princeton University, where she rowed on the varsity lightweight crew team. She earned her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. She completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, where she remains affiliated. She completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Through her Rothman affiliation, she serves as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, actively conducting research and mentoring young physicians. She has shared research findings through many publications, book chapters and presentations, nationally and internationally. “I developed an appreciation for the remarkable capabilities of the human body as an athlete. My medical training has deepened my understanding and gives me the opportunity to build relationships with my patients, help in times of need and have a real positive impact on their lives,” she says.
Dr. Ponzio says she wanted to follow in the footsteps of her father, Robert J. Ponzio, also an accomplished orthopaedic surgeon. “Watching him interact with his patients and seeing their deep gratitude in return was truly inspiring,” she says.
