About Me

Jean Haspel was a young nurse working on a medical-surgical unit when she befriended a patient about her age. He was being treated for AIDS, and her interactions with him changed the course of her career.

“I would go into his room, talk to him, hold his hand and he’d say, ‘You’re a natural at this,’” she remembers. “That, to me, was it. A light went on that I’m in the right profession, and I think HIV/AIDS is where I need to specialize.”

As an Adult Nurse Practitioner HIV Specialist at AtlantiCare, Haspel treats not only patients with HIV, but also hepatitis, substance use disorder, latent TB infection and sexually transmitted infections. “When it comes to substance use, HIV, hepatitis … these circles all overlap,” she says. “We are in a synergistic epidemic, and my goal is to treat patients within each of these circles.”

Haspel earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Stockton University. One of the first recipients of AtlantiCare’s Advanced Nursing Practice Fellowship, she completed her Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania. She is certified as an HIV Specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

At AtlantiCare, she looks forward to using new and developing techniques, such as long-acting injectable treatments, to treat HIV and prevent HIV infection. Advancements in Hepatitis C virus treatment are exciting as well, and she says it is heartwarming to see patients respond to treatment. Over time, they begin to see improvement in their immune systems, allowing them to regain their quality of life.

“It’s like watching someone blossom, and it’s beautiful to watch,” Haspel says. “I can’t tell you how thankful they are to be restored to their best possible health.”

Born in Somers Point, Haspel enjoys genealogy, gardening and travel. She also has a lifelong passion for art, and has an art studio in her home
