About Me

Dr. Shirley Mills knew she was destined for women’s health when she witnessed her first childbirth in medical school. “It was an unreal experience,” she recalls. “I knew I wanted to be part of this intimate moment of life, over and over again,” she says. Dr. Mills earned her medical degree at Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia. She completed her OB/GYN residency at University of Florida, Pensacola. She also holds a bachelor’s in biomedical engineering from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J., where she graduated cum laude. She says she enjoys the continuity of care in women’s health. “I treat women from teenagers through childbirth years and all the way to menopause. It’s challenging and multifaceted and I like the mix of wellness, family planning, medicine and surgery,” she says. She says being a doctor is being a coach, cheerleader, friend and confidante. “We have to discuss very intimate details. It’s not dinner-table conversation. I want to be that person, the one they trust and feel safe with,” she says. A mother of two young children, Dr. Mills says becoming a mother has only reinforced her passion for her specialty. “Becoming a parent is a life-changing experience. It automatically made me a better doctor since I’ve been in my patients’ shoes. It goes beyond me telling them what to do because I learned it from a textbook. I’m a counsel and a guide and my patients really appreciate that approach,” she says. She learned about AtlantiCare during her residency in Florida and knows she made the right choice. She really appreciates the camaraderie – how the more experienced providers mentor the younger ones. “My colleagues are so supportive. It’s a truly collaborative culture and I am never afraid to ask for help,” she says.
