About Me

Dr. Zain ul Abideen, rheumatologist, says his greatest reward is alleviating suffering with accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. He treats diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus, polymyalgia rheumatica, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis and others. “These diseases can be challenging and some of my patients have been suffering for years,” he explains. “When we first meet, they may be on crutches or unable to make a fist. And in
\nthe vast majority of cases, after only a few weeks of intensive therapy, we see dramatic improvement.”

Dr. Abideen is board certified in both rheumatology and geriatrics by the American Board of Internal Medicine. His geriatrics training enhances his rheumatology skills, as many of his patients are seniors. A graduate of Allama Iqbal Medical College in Pakistan, he completed his residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine (North General program), New York. He completed his geriatrics medicine fellowship at Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn. He completed his fellowship in rheumatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where he trained under the legendary rheumatology pioneer Harry Spiera, MD.

Rheumatology care can improve pain, stiffness and range of motion with medicines, physical therapy and other non-surgical treatments, like ultrasound. It is an active area of research and many breakthroughs have been made over the decades. “We have many more options today than we did years ago, including some very effective injectable drugs and newer oral medications,” he says.

“Many of my patients have more than one problem and can be complex to manage. But we can almost always make an improvement and get them back to the world of good health. That makes medicine among the most rewarding professions,” he says. Dr. Abideen has been part of an active practice in New Mexico for nearly a decade and is relocating to Mays Landing. He and his wife are busy with their three children. A sports buff, when he gets a
\nmoment of free time, he both follows and plays cricket, soccer and tennis.
