About Me
As a young man, Dr. Fotios Tjoumakaris learned first-hand how sports medicine can change lives, after he suffered a torn ACL in college. “I loved sports but my knee kept giving out. Surgery got me back to doing everything. I played sports for fun, but if getting my knee fixed was that important to me, I could only imagine how important it would be to a serious athlete,” he says.

That experience planted a seed. Dr. Tjoumakaris is board certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, from which he also holds certification in sports medicine. He is a shoulder specialist and is also trained in knee and hip reconstruction and trauma. A native of Linwood, he is a graduate of Stockton University. He earned his M.D. at Rutgers University – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed his residency and internship at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He served a fellowship in orthopaedic surgery sports medicine and shoulder surgery at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is passionate about training the surgeons of tomorrow. He holds committee assignments with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, where he helps shape board certification testing and other training materials. Through his affiliation with Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, he also serves as an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, where he conducts research focused on improving return to-play guidelines.

His work is helping to establish reliable, outcome-based criteria for recovery time to reduce reinjury. “I love research and working actively on outcome improvement. Our early data has shown some reinjury rates reduced by half,” he says. He lives in Seaville, Upper Township with his wife and three children. In addition to the time he volunteers for his research, they are active in their church.
