About Me
Megan Cohl, nurse midwife, made quite a career leap; from professional dancer to nurse midwife. But since opportunities for dancers are limited, she knew she’d eventually have to pivot. And as her friends began having families, she realized that the birthing experience wasn’t always what it could be. “These were dancers, fit and healthy people, yet the birthing experience was less than ideal,” she recalls. Some had preventable complications. Some were subjected to C-section surgery that might have been avoidable. “I realized I could make the experience better as a midwife,” she says.
\nMegan is board-certified by ACNM, the American College of Nurse Midwives. A dance graduate of Marymount Manhattan College, New York, she earned her nursing bachelor’s and master’s at University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Philadelphia. Dance turned out to be a solid foundation for healthcare. “Dancers are very self-aware about their bodies, movement and how anatomy works. That all contributes,” she says. She says the nurse midwives view the birthing family holistically. “Pregnancy and birth are normal parts of life, not a diagnosis. We see the parents as a unit and consider the full scope of their life circumstances. We take care of what needs to be done today but always see the bigger picture,” she says.
\nPart of that philosophy is education. “Information is enabling, regardless of background. That supports the best experience I can give, even when a C-section is needed or the pregnancy becomes high risk. I want the family to feel like part of the team and to make well-informed decisions,” she says. She did clinical rotations at AtlantiCare and learned it was a great place to be for young medical professionals. “It’s challenging but supportive, and I really like my colleagues and my patients.”
