About Me
Dr. Robert Perez, surgeon, says advanced technology makes surgery better. Specializing in complex and advanced hernia repairs, he describes robotically-assisted surgery like science fiction. “It essentially shrinks me down to a tiny surgeon, where I can see all the muscles and the tiniest imperfections in great detail,” he says.
\nA fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Perez is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery. A graduate of Rutgers – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, he completed his residency at Cooper University Hospital, Camden. His fellowship in robotic and minimally invasive surgery was at Albany Medical Center, New York. He speaks Filipino and Spanish.
\nWith over 10 years’ experience in robotics, he was previously Director of Robotic Surgery at Virtua Health System in New Jersey and gained additional experience in Florida.
\nHe started on a different path. He has a master’s in biophysics from Georgetown, Washington, D.C., and a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Princeton, where he graduated cum laude. He even worked in strategy consulting. But he says surgery is where he was meant to be. “What drew me to engineering also attracted me to surgery. I love fixing things. I can’t imagine doing anything else.” He says robotics has revolutionized surgery. “We’re more accurate, with better results, less pain and no hospital stay. Almost none of my patients need opioid pain medicine. And it increases the number of people we can help, compared to years ago. We can fix just about anything, improving lives,” he says.
\nHe says AtlantiCare shares his dedication to results. “I believe in AtlantiCare. The leadership supports and appreciates us and we have an amazing team,” he says.
\nDr. Perez teaches residents and trains other surgeons on the DaVinci surgery system. He grew up in Holmdel, N.J. and lives in Haddonfield with his children and wife, whom he met while serving as an AmeriCorps volunteer. They stay busy with their four kids’ sports schedules.
