About Me
For Sherry Pharo, advanced practice nurse, taking care of her patients’ emotional needs is just as important as their medical care. “My patients do better when we communicate clearly and completely,” she says. “Listening and being open and honest creates a safe space where they’re willing to tell me exactly what’s going on. That’s one key to success in medicine.”
\nPharo earned her master’s in nursing as an adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner at Rowan University. She also holds a bachelor’s in nursing from Stockton University. With deep roots in the AtlantiCare community, she started as a certified cardiovascular technician in the progressive cardiac care unit. She also worked in trauma medical-surgical and as a charge nurse and certified medical assistant with AtlantiCare Physician Group.
\nEarly in her career, the nurses and doctors she worked with inspired her to do more. “They were dedicated, caring and selfless,” she recalls. “I saw these same qualities in myself and I eventually reached the point of having the confidence to say ‘I can do this’ and the courage to go back to school to become a nurse.” When she finished her master’s she was ready for a new challenge. She found it in vascular “I like the complexity of vascular care and fixing problems in both arteries and veins to help our patients feel better,” she says.
\nAt AtlantiCare, Pharo cares for people with peripheral arterial disease, treating thrombosis, aneurysm, stroke, heart attacks, impaired mobility and providing wound care. “Throughout my career, I have tried hard to be 100 percent present with my patients and key in on the emotional,” she says. “Having a procedure in the hospital can cause anxiety and they need someone who can help them get through their hospital stay.”
