About Me
Maryam Rehan went to medical school because she wanted to help others. Then her mother was diagnosed with cancer and her career path became much more personal. Because it did, she is able to relate to her patients on a more personal, intimate level. “A doctor needs to be compassionate. A doctor needs to be available to their patients. And a doctor needs to understand what their patient is going through,” she says. “I look at things from their perspective because I know it’s not an easy diagnosis to confront and go through.”
Rehan earned her medical degree at Allama Iqbal Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan. After finishing her internal medicine residency at Northwell Health – Staten Island University Hospital, she completed her fellowship in hematology / oncology, including a year as chief fellow, at Zucker School of Medicine at Northwell Health – Staten Island University Hospital.
Rehan is a hematologist and medical oncologist at the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute, assisting her patients as they navigate a cancer diagnosis. She takes pride in joining her patients on their journey. That includes getting to know the whole person to understand their perspective and create a sense of teamwork. “You need to have patients and loved ones involved in the care plan because they are the ones invested in the final decision,” Rehan says. “You should communicate with your patients clearly and comprehensively. It is important to their well-being and helps them to make informed decisions.”
She also wants to know that however dire a patient feels about their situation it’s important to realize she is there to provide comfort and care. She speaks from experience “Having my own family go through this,” she says, “I know there’s always hope at the end.”
