AtlantiCare’s cardio-oncology program is led by cardiologists trained to evaluate and treat people who have heart disease or may develop heart disease before, during and after their course of treatment for cancer. Some cancer treatments, including radiation therapy and chemotherapy, can worsen or even cause heart problems.

Advanced treatment with chemotherapy, radiation therapy and other cancer treatments can reduce cancer death.  However, these cancer treatment modalities can also damage the heart, which is known as cardiotoxicity.  Heart damage can occur early stage of the treatment or occur many years later.  These complications include heart failure, arrhythmias, hypertension, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, thromboembolic disease, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, pulmonary hypertension and pericardial disease.

At AtlantiCare, patients benefit from our cutting-edge Cardio-Oncology Program at Cancer Center Institute, where cardiologists work together with multidisciplinary team members, including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, pharmacists, nurses, and others to deliver comprehensive care for people with cancer who have heart disease or may develop heart disease before, during and after their course of treatment for cancer. The goal of our Program is to help patients through their cancer treatment and have the best possible cancer survival rates, while minimizing possible side effects of cancer treatments on the heart.

Services offered by our program:

  • Comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment prior to undergoing medical or surgical treatments for cancer
  • State of the art cardiac imaging to detect and monitor early changes in cardiac function during cancer treatment
  • Early prevention and treatment of cardiac disease that may develop during cancer therapy
  • Treating cardiac conditions that may result from cancer therapeutics
  • Monitoring long-term cardiac risk in cancer survivors
