What is Menopause?

Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the permanent end of your menstrual cycle and ability to bear children. It’s typically diagnosed when you’ve naturally gone 12 months without a menstrual period, and usually occurs in your mid-40s to mid-50s.

Menopause doesn’t happen abruptly — in the months or years leading up to it, you may begin to experience symptoms such as:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Hot flashes
  • Chills
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep problems
  • Mood changes
  • Weight gain and slowed metabolism
  • Thinning hair and dry skin
  • Loss of breast fullness

You may also notice that periods become more irregular — skipping and returning at various intervals. Pregnancy is still possible during this time and missed periods should still be taken seriously. Your women’s health provider can help you determine whether you’ve entered this premenopausal process, also known as perimenopause.

Treatment options — for those who need it.

Menopause is a natural and expected process of each woman’s life. While some physiological changes can be expected, if you’re unable to work or regularly feel unwell, you should consult with your provider. If needed, there are treatment options that help manage symptoms and lessen the impact on daily life. The following are recommended depending on the severity of symptoms and your individual health needs.
