About Me
From the humble beginnings, a single-parent home in an inner-city neighborhood, Neydin Rivera overcame challenges and returned to her community as a nurse midwife. “Our family did okay but we had struggles. I worked hard to get educated and I had great support from my mom and grandmother. I’m proud to be an example to people who come from where I came from. You can do this!” she says.
Neydin is board-certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board. She earned her master’s at Frontier Nursing University in Kentucky and her bachelor’s at Chamberlain University in Illinois. Neydin’s career choice was determined early on. “I always knew I wanted to be a nurse. I was sick when I was 14 and an AtlantiCare nurse took great care of me. Coincidentally, I ran into her the day I registered for nursing school and got to tell her that she was my inspiration.”
Having children of her own drove her passion to become a midwife. “I always wanted to connect with women before, during and after pregnancy. I want to get to know them and educate them. Teaching and ensuring that patients follow up is a big thing for me.” Neydin knows that underserved people may not have all the knowledge they need about medical options and don’t always get the best care. She does all she can to overcome that.
A shared background and language also helps. “It is really challenging for patients who don’t speak English well. I have seen their faces light up when they realize we can discuss their care in Spanish,” she says. Always up for a new challenge, she even pushed herself to learn some Swahili on a recent medical mission trip to rural Kenya.
