Mary - Why she chose weight loss surgery.
Struggling with being overweight since childhood, Mary says she has always felt like the black sheep among her physically fit family members. She didn’t have success with numerous diets and exercise regimes. Mary also found that attending college — and its respective meal plan — added to this weight gain.
Her father, a bariatric surgeon at AtlantiCare, suggested that she attend a bariatric seminar to gain additional knowledge on this topic. She felt this was a wake-up call in her decision to undergo surgery. She chose to have a sleeve gastrectomy procedure in the winter of 2012. Mary had lost over 50 pounds by the end of that following summer, and she continues to work toward her target weight. Before surgery, she suffered from high blood pressure and asthma. She now has normal blood pressure and does not require her asthma medication.
