The Department of Psychiatry offers a wide variety of robust didactics focused on Psychopathology, Neuroscience, Psychopharmacology, and various treatment modalities including CBT, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Supportive Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and DBT among other modalities.  Our didactics have a rich diversity of faculty lecturers specializing in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Community Psychiatry, Consult-Liaison, and Substance Use Disorders.

Crash Course

Interns receive a month-long crash course focusing on diagnosis and treatment, psychopharmacology, emergency psychiatry and community psychiatry.  During the first month of residency interns are paired with a senior resident who provides supervision and support during the transition from medical school to residency.

Weekly Didactics

A hybrid of in-person and virtual weekly lectures are held every Tuesday with a half-day of protected time in the comfort of your own home or in our new Medical Arts Pavilion building that was designed for Medical Education and clinical care. We have an amphitheater, classrooms, office space and a SIM Center. Each week didactics conclude with all residents participating in a fun game of Rosh Review Live question bank.

Journal Club

A recent journal article is critically analyzed and discussed each month and lead by our residents and our Program Director.

Resident Directed Didactics

Every Monday a resident-run didactic provides an opportunity for teaching medical students and engaging them with psychiatry in ways beyond clinical interaction. Each week, medical students will give a brief presentation (~10 minutes) on any topic in psychiatry. Afterwards, the residents begin a discussion regarding a DSM-5 category.  The resident scheduled to present that day can choose either a PowerPoint, article, game, leading a group discussion, or any idea that keeps everyone engaged. Lecture-style is not required; neither are PowerPoints.

We have a dedicated didactic day where we watch a file in our amphitheater and discuss the psychological aspect. Some of the films up for discussion include:

  • Silver Linings Playbook - Netflix
  • Girl Interrupted - Amazon Prime
