LBI Grade School Blog

The Long Beach Island Grade School PEP classes. The PEP classes are offered three times a week, with various activities offered, which include social-emotional learning and academic as well as physical activities. The Walking Classroom consists of 8 Play Aways that have downloaded podcasts that are relevant to the curriculum presented in the classroom. The students are given an individual Play Away with earbuds (which are disinfected after every use!) and the outdoor walking begins! The students are also given pedometers to track their daily/weekly steps and are charted at the end of the period to encourage being consistent with their steps! This also turns into a mini math lesson, which makes learning fun and relevant. There is also a discussion at the end of the period to go over the podcasts that the students listened to, and any relevant information can be shared at this time. We feel the positive effects of the walking classroom throughout the course of the day and look forward to adding more classes in the fall. Most importantly as well, the students are able to get outside and enjoy our beautiful weather days while engaging in an enjoyable learning activity!
