PREPARING FOR MOTHERHOOD THROUGH COMMUNITY
CenteringPregnancy is a unique way to experience prenatal care, bringing mothers-to-be out of the exam room and into a comfortable group setting. Through health assessment, interactive learning and community building, the program delivers better health outcomes and a better patient experience.
Learn with Women Like You
The program offers 10 sessions, each lasting 90 minutes and consisting of two parts:
1. Individual care
A one-on-one session with your provider to check your baby’s health and discuss private concerns. This is also when you’ll receive the usual prenatal care, such as lab tests, prescriptions and ultrasounds.
2. Group session with other expectant mothers
The remaining time will be spent in a group setting with other mothers-to-be who are due around the same date as you. Each group will remain intimate, with eight to 12 women. Facilitated by providers or midwives, these sessions offer time to share and connect with women like you. Together, you’ll discuss topics like:
- Exercise
- Nutrition
- Stress reduction
- Signs of labor
- Breastfeeding
- New baby care and postnatal expectations
- Anything else that comes up or is relevant to the group
An Abundance of Benefits
Ease of planning: Dates and times are predetermined, making it easier to schedule around work, childcare and other life obligations.
A network of support: You’ll learn and grow along with other women who are experiencing pregnancy on the same timeline as you. We expect you may even develop lasting friendships.
Improved outcomes: Some studies show that women who take part in these programs have better pregnancy outcomes, such as less risk of giving birth prematurely.
Made for All Women
If you’ve met with an AtlantiCare OB/GYN, you’re eligible to participate in CenteringPregnancy, and there’s no additional cost to you. It’s the same as with traditional care, and determined by your insurance benefits.
Your partner or support person is always welcome to attend if you wish.
However, for the sake of your care and those in your group, we request that children do not attend these sessions.
CenteringPregnancy is held at the AtlantiCare Medical Arts Pavilion in Atlantic City.
