Heart Heroes AED Matching Funds Program

A partnership to place automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in our community

The AtlantiCare Heart Heroes is an AtlantiCare Foundation-funded program that places AEDs in the community on behalf of the Heart & Vascular Institute at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

The program began in 2002, spurred by a small group of dedicated AtlantiCare volunteers who were known as “The Heart Heroes,” who raised funds to assist AtlantiCare in making AEDs more readily available in the community.

Through our AED Heart Heroes partnership, AtlantiCare has placed more than 300 AEDs at recreation centers, schools, places of worship, fire and police departments, municipal buildings, and other well-populated places throughout Southern New Jersey.

Criteria to be met upon approval of matching funds ($700 per AED):

  • Have a licensed medical authority (such as a Physician, RN, or EMT) provide medical oversight of the AED, to ensure quality control.
  • Have personnel who are responsible for using the AED, certified in CPR.
    • If a certification class is needed, contact the AtlantiCare Access Center at 1-888-569-1000 or your local Fire/Police Department, the Red Cross, or the American Heart Association.
  • Attend AED usage training.
    • Initial training provided by AtlantiCare during placement of the AED.
  • Conduct programs or services for the public, where there is potential for emergency response to a heart attack.

* Please note that meeting this criteria does not guarantee that matching funds will be granted.
