Smoking Cessation

Quitting smoking can be hard and frustrating. But there are many ways to stop, and with trial and error you can find a method that works for you. No matter which method you choose, here are some strategies that can help you along the way.

Quitting tobacco is not easy. Nevertheless, it is easier when you have help, such as counseling, advice from a healthcare provider or nicotine replacement therapy. In fact, getting help can double or triple your chances of quitting for good. At AtlantiCare, we’re in your corner and partners in your health – with tobacco cessation classes, proven programs and the expert in-person support you need to start living tobacco-free. Remember, it's never too late to quit, no matter your age or how long you've smoked. Do it for yourself, and do it for your loved ones.

Benefits to quitting smoking

Some benefits occur quickly; more occur over time.

  • Within 20 minutes of quitting, your blood pressure and pulse rate begin to return to normal.
  • Within 48 hours of quitting, your sense of smell and taste begin to return to normal.
  • After a year without smoking, your risk for heart disease is lowered to half that of a smoker.
  • After two to five years of not smoking, your risk of having a stroke is the same as that of a nonsmoker.
  • After five years of quitting, your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus and bladder is cut in half.
  • By not smoking, you help protect family and friends from health risks associated with breathing secondhand smoke.
